How intelligent is Netbackup 7.5?

I need a solution

Hi,

Yet another newbie question!

We have netbackup 7.5, Windows and Unix, two sites with Data Domain storage on both.

We are slowly migrating to Netbackup and at the moment all of our backups are on servers in SiteA. We have a media server configured in SiteB and the master server (in SiteB) is also a media server.

After a backup completes a duplication job then starts, as configured in the standard SLP. I've noticed that the media server for the duplication is always a SiteB media server, which is local to the SiteB Data Domain box which is receiving the duplicate from the primary copy on SiteA. But I haven't configured this - all media servers have access to both storage units (one on SiteA and one on SiteB). All media servers also have the DD Boost plugin and are registered within the Data Domain boxes as DD boost servers, with login credentials.

So why is Netbackup always choosing a media server on the receiving side of the duplication? The media servers do not actually move the data - as I understand it it is a direct data copy between the two DD boxes. The media servers only 'manage' or 'order' the duplication.

Why and how is netbackup deciding to use those media servers on the receiving side? Or is this just magical coincidence?

Thanks, probably a very dumb question!
